Federal cabinet to review ECL decision today

ISLAMABAD: The federal cabinet will review the decision to place the names of 172 people named in the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) report in the fake account case on the Exit Control List (ECL).

Those, whose names were put on ECL following the JIT report, also include PPP Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari, Bilawal Bhutto, Faryal Talpur and Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah.

Prime Minister Imran Khan will preside over the meeting of the cabinet, which will be held today.

The cabinet will be discussing a 20-point agenda and the issue of ECL is at number four of the list.

The Prime Minister Office has also asked the federal ministers of interior and law each to present their opinion on the matter during the meeting.

Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar had asked the government to review the decision, saying the JIT had overstepped his mandate by recommending to include names of 172 people on the ECL in light of the JIT report.

Moreover, sources have also revealed the prime minister has called up the cabinet’s session before his tour to Turkey keeping in light the directions of the apex court. The premier is set to leave for a two-day visit to Turkey on January 3.

In its previous meeting, the government had directed the authorities to place names of 172 people on the no-fly list, including names of PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto, co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari, his sister Faryal Talpur and Chief Minister of Sindh Murad Ali Shah.
