Who is Bipin Rawat, the next Indian Army Chief?

Indian Defense Ministry announced on Saturday, Lt General Bipin Rawat will be the next Indian Chief of Army Staff and take charge on January 1st, 2017.

Bipin Rawat commissioned from IMA in December 1978, in the fifth Battalion of the Eleven Gorakh Rifles, and awarded “Sword of Honour”.

He is well experienced in high altitude warfare and counter insurgency operations. He commanded an Infantry battalion along the Line of Control (LoC) in Eastern sector, at Rashtriya Rifles sector and Infantry Division in the Disputed Kashmir.

He held important staff appointments at Directorate General of Military Operations and Military Secretary’s Branch at Army HQ.

He also served as Major General General Staff a t HQ Eastern Command where he commanded Multinational Brigade in a Chapter VII mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUC).

Rawat studied at the Defence Services Staff College, Willington and Higher Command and National Defence College.

In the 35 years of service in uniform has been given the award of gallantry and distinguished services.
