Ahmed al-Tayeb condemns French priest’s murder

CAIRO: Egypt’s top Muslim cleric Ahmed al-Tayeb denounced on Wednesday the “barbaric” murder of an elderly French priest by militants who stormed a Catholic church in a Normandy town.

Tayeb, who heads the Al-Azhar institute, said the two attackers who killed the priest and took hostages on Tuesday “were stripped of humanity and Islamic values”.

Tayeb “renewed his call for united efforts in confronting the cancer of terrorism that threatens the entire world”, said a statement from Al-Azhar, a leading centre of Islamic learning.

The Islamic State group had claimed the attack, which came less than two weeks after a militant driving a truck ploughed into a crowd in the city of Nice, killing 84 people. –AFP
