“Modi Murdabad” students chant slogans in front of Indian PM

LUCKNOW: Students record protest during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech at Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University in Lucknow, over the suicide of Dilat student, TheNewsTribe.com learnt from Indian media.

A student was escorted out of the auditorium and some protesters have been detained. PM Modi is attending several events in Uttar Pradesh today associated with BR Ambedkar, the architect of the Constitution and a Dalit icon, signalling his party’s focus on Dalits, who comprise a vital 21-22 per cent of voters in the state, where elections will be held in 2017.

In his first comments on the suicide of Hyderabad research student Rohith Vemula, which has caused a massive political controversy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said India had lost a young son and he “felt his family’s pain.”

“What his family members must be going through. Mother India has lost her son. Politics aside, the fact is that we lost a son. I can understand the pain,” PM Modi said while addressing convocation at the Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University in Lucknow.
