SAARC summit concludes with adoption of 36-point Kathmandu Declaration

KATHMANDU: The 18th SAARC Summit on Thursday ended with the adoption of 36-point Kathmandu Declaration.

The Declaration emphasized on SAFTA and trade facilitation, connectivity, combating terrorism and trans-national crimes as well as strengthening the SAARC processes.

It also urged that it is high time to reinvigorate SAARC’s regional cooperation and revitalize it as an effective vehicle to fulfill the developmental aspirations of the peoples of South Asia.

The Heads of States also vowed to deepen regional integration for peace, stability and prosperity in South Asia.

The leaders agreed to hold a Meeting of the Transport Ministers within three months in order to finalize the Motor Vehicles Agreement and Regional Railways Agreement. The leaders have reiterated their strong commitment to free South Asia from poverty.

The Heads of State have also directed to end the threshold criteria from the SAARC Food Bank Agreement.

They also instructed the relevant SAARC bodies to finalize the establishment of Regional Vaccine Bank and Regional Livestock Gene Bank.

The leaders have also given directions to their Education Ministers to develop a regional strategy for enhancing the quality of education.

The Government heads highlighted the need for effective cooperation among the Member States to combat terrorism and violent extremism in all its forms and manifestations.

Addressing the concluding ceremony, Prime Minister of Nepal Sushil Koirala said that Pakistan will host the 19th SAARC summit.

They also exchanged pleasantries on the occasion.
