SAARC summit: Nawaz Sharif refuses to use bulletproof car provided by India

KATHMANDU: Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif refused to use a bullet proof car provided by arch rival India for the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation summit and will bring his own car, which is described a snub of India by its archival neighbour.

Media report quoted a Nepalese Foreign Ministry Speksman Khaga Nath Adhikari as saying: “Sharif will be bringing his own car … all other vehicles for [visiting] heads of countries have been provided by India.”

Adhikari rejected the notion that the the move was a snub of India by its arch rival Pakistan. “It’s not that they have refused to use an Indian car … when the US president travels, he also brings his own car, it’s not an issue,” he said.

Recent exchanges of fire across Line of Control in Kashmir and working boundary in Sialkot sector that killed at least 20 civilians and forced thousands to flee their homes, have strained the already fragile relations between the two countries.

The SAARC will be attended by leaders of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, Nepal, India and Pakistan in Kathmandu on November 26 and 27.
