Radio Pakistan may close down local languages bulletins

ISLAMABAD: The state-owned broadcasting service, Radio Pakistan, is on the verge of losing its rural audience, which is a unique point of the national broadcasting service.

Reports published in Pakistan’s media claim that Radio Pakistan has decided to fire hundreds of employees as the broadcasting service is planning to close its local languages news bulletins.

News bulletins in Kashmiri, Punjabi, Sindhi, Balochi and other local languages have been stopped since August 12 when the sit-ins of Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) were about to begin in Islamabad.

The reports said, while quoting sources, that Radio Pakistan’s Director General has stopped the broadcasts of local languages news bulletins till further orders.

The telecast of Urdu and English bulletins were shifted to Rawalpindi station from August 12 but from August 30 both (English & Urdu) bulletins were shifted again to Radio Pakistan’s headquarters in Islamabad. The reports said that between August 12 and 30 Islamabad station was closed due to the situation created by sit-ins in the surroundings of Radio Pakistan building.

News bulletins in local languages are still not being recorded which has created uncertainty among the employees associated with these services.

It’s worth mentioning here that local languages bulletins were started after the independence of Pakistan with the aim to educate the rural population of the country about government policies.
