‘Green Line’ bus project announced for Karachittes

KARACHI: The Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Thursday announced development of fast and efficient metro bus system, Green Line, for facilitating Karachi citizens in accordance to their transportation needs.


PM Nawaz Sharif paid visit to Karachi, the metropolis of Pakistan, allocated Rs15 billion for modern transportation project for Karachittes besides making various prominent announcements.

Sharif directed that all possible steps should be taken for restoration of peace in Karachi, saying that the federal government will fully support the Sindh government in this regard.

Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif chaired a meeting over Karachi’s law and security situation at the official residence of Sindh Governor Ishratul Ibad on Thursday. Prime Minister directed the Sindh government to start the work for recruitment in police.

Prime Minister directed the Sindh government to return the services of the IG Sindh to the federation. Prime Minister said that arms were not purchased, saying that as to how there will be achievement with regard to restoration of peace in Karachi if the work will be done with such pace.

Prime Minister directed the Chief Secretary Sindh to immediately start the work on the projects of Karachi circular Railway and Liyari expressway.

Nawaz Sharif said that he will give more developmental projects to Karachi as compared to Lahore. Prime Minister also directed to start the Karachi-Lahore motorway project.

According to sources, the prime minister reprimanded ministers over the worsening law and order situation in the city.

The premier showed displeasure over the way the affairs are being run by the Sindh government.

He asked as to why the directive of shifting the Karachi’s anti-terrorism courts to the city’s Malir Cantonment area was not implemented.

Moreover, Prime Minister came down hard on the Sindh government and questioned why the construction of a high-security prison and purchasing of modern weapons for police had not been done.

While addressing the chief Minister Sindh, Prime Minister said that as to how the law and order situation can be improved in Karachi if there will be no implementation of the decisions taken during the meeting.

Prime Minister said that arms were not purchased but the IG Sindh was transferred, saying that the situation will not improve with frequent transfers of IG Sindh. Prime Minister ordered for speeding up targeted raids in the city with focus on attacking the hideouts of the terrorists.

Prime Minister stressed for further improvement in intelligence sharing and devising a coordinated strategy to counter the possible reaction of terrorists over the military offensive in North Waziristan. He also urged for coordination between police and rangers.

Earlier, D.G. Rangers Sindh Maj. Gen. Rizwan Akhtar presented a detailed report on the operation and crackdown against outlawed groups in Karachi.

While the traders and the industrialists expressed severe reservations on the law and order situation Karachi, saying that there are black sheep in the police and law enforcement agencies in Karachi which are supervising the crimes mafia.

The traders and the industrialists informed that 17 traders were abducted from June 3 to July 10, saying that the extortionists are receiving extortion through easy paisa.

Chief Secretary Sindh and IG Rangers briefed the Prime Minister with regard to targeted operation in Karachi. It was informed in the briefing that attention has also been focused on the terrorists who have migrated to Karachi after operation Zarb-e-Azab in North Waziristan agency.

The premier was flanked by Federal Interior Minister Nisar Ali Khan, Federal Minister for Railways Khawaja Saad Rafiq, Central Information Secretary for Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Senator Mushahidullah Khan and party member Abdul Hakim Baloch.

During the meeting, the premier was also briefed on Karachi’s rapid transport plan. During his visit, the Prime Minister also held a meeting with a representative delegation of heads of political parties, business community and civil society.

The premier said that the federal government is aware of the transport issues faced by the financial capital.

Earlier, Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah welcomed the premier at the Karachi airport.

Soon after arriving in the city, the prime minister went to the residence of Nawab Charagh Marri and expressed condolence over the death of Baloch leader Khair Bakhsh Marri.

Speaking to media representatives, the premier said the federal government was keen to revolutionize Karachi’s transport system.

He said the government was fully aware of the transport problems of Karachi and said the rapid bus system will bring about a revolution in the transportation system for the residents of Karachi, who will be getting a fast and affordable service.

The prime minister announced that the federal government would immediately release Rs15 billion for development of metro bus routes, while the remaining cost would have to be borne by the City District Government Karachi (CDGK).
