Jason Collins’ former fiancee Carolyn Moos says she is still hurt that he wasn’t more forthcoming with her about his sexuality and that he didn’t tell her he was going to come out publicly in a story for Sports Illustrated.
In the August 2013 issue of Cosmopolitan, the 35-year-old athlete opened up about Jason and revealed her reaction to his coming out announcement.
Carolyn Moos indicates in the August issue of Cosmopolitan, due out on newsstands Tuesday, that Collins told her he was gay the day the SI article was supposed to hit newsstands, but he didn’t tell her about the story.
Moos says she still supports Collins but has yet to come to terms with the disintegration of their relationship.
“A month before I was set to marry the man I loved, he called off the wedding. I had no idea why. He and I had been together for eight years. We had planned to have children, build a family. Nearly four years later, I got my answer. My former fiancé, Jason Collins, a pro basketball player with the Washington Wizards, announced last spring in Sports Illustrated that he is gay. Jason told me he’s gay over the phone on a Monday morning in April, the same day the magazine hit newsstands. However, he didn’t mention the article – that came as a surprise when I heard about it from a friend.”
In April, Collins became the first active player in one of the four major U.S. professional sports leagues to come out as gay.
“I can’t imagine what it’s like to go through all the stages he has gone through, all the deep layers. I don’t know what it’s like to wear a mask for 34 years. It’s sad that society puts that kind of pressure on a person. I also understand the macho stereotypes men face in the NBA,” she said.
“I empathize with Jason and support him. But at the same time, I remain deeply hurt by him. I wish he could have been honest with me years ago. I feel like there are two Jasons now—the man I fell in love with and the man I’m trying so hard to understand. He’s being hailed as a pioneer, but I believe true heroism is a result of being honest with yourself and with those you love.”
