Chennai: A 23-year-old Indian woman has died at a private hospital in Chennai of injuries from an acid attack, NDTV reports.
The woman was an IT professional working in Chennai. In November, acid was thrown on her face when she was visiting her home-town of Puducherry, allegedly by a man whose marriage proposal she rejected. He threw acid on her at the bus stand where she was waiting for a bus to return to Chennai.
The man was arrested and is in prison.
Recently, the government cleared a new set of laws to protect women which provide a minimum of 10 years in prison for those convicted of acid attacks.
Last week, the Supreme Court ordered the centre to call a meeting of bureaucrats from all states to discuss how to safeguard women from acid attacks. The court also wants details of how victims will be compensated and rehabilitated.
