Washington: Yoga proved to be helpful in major psychiatric disorders including depression, schizophrenia and sleep complaints, a recent study found.
Professor of psychiatry and medicine at Duke P. Murali Doraiswamy along with Meera Balasubramaniam co-authored the study.
Findings from a review of over 100 studies supported Yoga as highly promising in mild depression, ADHD, schizophrenia and sleep complaints, affecting more than 350 million people globally, said World Health Organisation (WHO).
According to a survey by the Harris Interactive Service Bureau, the 5,000-year-old Indian practice is a popular exercise and is practised by 15.8 million adults in the United States alone.
Benefits of the exercise were found for all mental health illnesses included in the review.
