New Orleans, Louisiana: Hurricane Isaac damaged at least 13,000 homes in Louisiana after the storm struck the US Gulf Coast a week, officials said on Tuesday.
A spokeswoman for the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness said the figures were preliminary and efforts were under way to probe the exact damages.
“Our preliminary assessments are driven by conditions on the ground, and in some areas flooding limits where the teams can go. We do expect that this number could rise after FEMA completes house-by-house inspections as residents register for individual assistance,” said Christina Stephens.
The hurricane came ashore in Louisiana near the Mississippi River as a Category 1 storm, relatively weak compared to Katrina that killed around 1,800 seven years ago.
One major aftermath of the storm is pollution problem and the state authorities are already dealing with around 90 such cases, including six active, minor oil leaks from various storage tanks, The Christian Science Monitor reported.
Coast Guard Capt. Peter Gautier said oil leaks are to be expected in hurricanes.
“We’re all very sensitive to oil spill response, especially in the wake of Deepwater Horizon,” he said.
The Public Service Commission said nearly 38,000 homes and businesses remained without electricity, about 2 percent of customers, a drop from more than 900,000 outages immediately after the storm slowly wound its way through southeast Louisiana.
