Gilgit: :At least 16 people were killed and more than 40 others injured in fierce fighting between two sectarian groups in Gilgit,on Tuesday.
According to police, several people fell injured as two groups locked horns.. They said that a hand-grenade attack left four people wounded at Ittehad Chowk.
Later, in adjoining Chillas area unknown assailants dragged six passengers out of as many buses and killed them. The buses were also set on fire.
Police, Rangers and Gilgit-Baltistan Scouts were deployed in the area to overcome the situation but to no avail. The situation forced the authorities to impose curfew in the area for indefinite period.
Sources in the area told that exchange of fire continue despite the curfew.
It is to mention here that hundreds of people have lost their lives in the region due to sectarian rift between militant groups of Shiite and Sunni sects while authorities remained reluctant to find a permanent solution to provide relief to the people.
