Peshawar: Dispelling the notion that the army will take over the democratic government, Pakistan’s powerful military chief General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani has said there is no threat to democracy.

He was speaking to his soldiers in Mohmand Agency near Afghan border, where Nato and US forces killed 26 troops last week.

While talking to reporters on Friday, He said that the army would continue its support for the democracy.

Kayani said that speculations were being made to divert attention form problems facing the country.

The military chief said that the army was aware of its constitutional responsibilities.

The statement came a day after Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani in his diatribe in the National Assembly said conspiracies were being hatched against the governmnet.

He had also said how Osama bin Laden was able to take shelter in Pakistan for six years.

It is to mention here that Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhamamd Chaudhry has also said that there will not be military take over in the country as the court will protect the constitution.

Civilian and military establishment are on the collusion course over the memogate issue.
