Kinshasa: At least 53 people were killed and 40 others were rescued in a plane crash in Democratic Republic of the Congo on Friday.
Rescue workers at the site have pulled out 40 survivors so far from the 112 people who were on board the plane, Congo’s government spokesman said.
“The crash happened about 200 metres from Kisangani Airport during landing in heavy rain. We have already removed 40 survivors,” government spokesman Lambert Mende said. “The rescue operations are continuing.”
The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals and rescue operation was in progress, government officials said.
The plane is owned by Hewa Bora, a private Congolese airline that flies from Kinshasa to various destinations around the country.
