Islamabad: Chairman Higher Education Commission (HEC) Javed Leghari said that devolution of HEC would be a severe blow to the higher education system.
He said that final decision about HEC has not been taken yet.He urged Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani to take notice of the matter otherwise.
Talking to a local TV, Chairman Higher Education Commission (HEC) Javed Leghari said that whole nation have full confidence in its achievements.
He said that HEC attests more than twenty million degrees every year. He added that Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani must value the education instead of the wills of the parliamentarians. Devolution of HEC would be disastrous for the educational system. And if it was shifted to the provinces then students won’t get chances to fulfill their dreams of acquiring high level education by free and fair means.
Leghari demanded of the Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani to review Government’s decision on HEC.
Moreover, a large number of students across the country took to the streets and staged protest demonstration against government’s proposed plan to devolve  the HEC to the provinces according to 18th amendment to the constitution.
Protest demonstrations were held  in all major cities of the country, including,Karachi, Lahore,Multan, Bahawalpur, Peshawar.Students teachers and HEC officials participated in the demonstrations and opposed the government move.
