Despite the fact that Raymond Davis has been proved to be a CIA agent, he seems to be an “blessing in disguise” for us. Unless Raymond Davis had not been exposed, Pakistan would not have got this golden chance to contact eye to eye with America.
As US has always been dictating its terms to other countries, which is actually an intoxication of being super power or more suitably as hyper super power, Pakistan has turned the table after Davis arrest. In the beginning of Davis case, US government resorted to its traditional threats, intimidations or arm twisting, but Pakistan is lucky that Pakistani people, political parties, lawyers, religious groups, ISI and even ex-foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi and high ups of Foreign Offices united on the issue and stand up to the intimidations and threats that ultimately compelled the US administration to kneel down and soften its stance.
As now contacts and cooperation between ISI and CIA have reportedly been severed as Davis saga has stranded relations between the spy agencies. Pakistan has taken the plea that the case is in the court and should be decided by the court of law. This is, I think, a golden chance for Pakistan to rescue from a blind well in which Pervaiz Musharraf pushed us during his dictatorial regime through his arbitrary decisions. Still we don’t have an idea what are the terms of engagements between the Musharraf regime and the then Bush administrations for cooperation between the spy agencies of the tow countries.
Hundreds of CIA operatives flooded the country after General Musharraf’s decision to join the so-called US war on terror. Reportedly, after the installment of PPP-led democratic dispensation in the country, visas to US secret agents and CIA operatives were issued in bulk quantity in violation of rules and without any check from Pak embassy in US and UAE. After that the incidents of terrorism increased manifold in the country.
As US is threatening that Pakistan would not be given further aid, and sanctions would be clamped, or Davis case would be taken to International Court of Justice or USA would end diplomatic relationships with Pakistan, shows that US government is hesitant in taking any of these course of action. US was not expecting that Pakistan could show such stubbornness and would stand up to its threats and intimidation. And now this is the same America which changed it intimidating attitude and requesting now.
The military and ISI besides Foreign Office role on the Davis issue is appreciable. Also ISI has demanded US government to give the details of the secret agents and CIA, FBI operatives working in Pakistan. Also US commanders’ meeting with General Kyani shows that USA can’t afford to end relationships with Pakistan because if it happens, antiterrorism intelligence sharing will surely be stopped and definitely America never wants this! Apart from this, US needs support from Pakistan for a face saving and dignified exiting from the Afghan quagmire.
I don’t know what takes place in future but as a Pakistani, I believe that Pakistan should only be mindful of its own interests. What people of Pakistan want, what national interests is, who are friends and enemies, Pakistan should take care of all these and should not take any decision that can integrity and sovereignty of Pakistan.
